The Ogoni/Opobo/Nkoro/Andoni Unity Road project’s Andoni section was supposed to be completed by the contractor after several years, but Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, said he would revoke and re-award the contract.
The contract sum for the Andoni section of the project, according to Fubara, has been fully paid to the contractors by the State Government, and he expressed displeasure with the pace of work while responding to questions from newsmen shortly after the inspection of the road project on Saturday.
This information was provided to journalists on Saturday night in a statement that was signed by Boniface Onyedi, the governor’s senior special assistant for media.
The Governor stated that although the government of Rivers State had met with Andoni opinion leaders and the contractors a year prior to work out details for the project’s successful execution and had complied with all acceptable contractual terms, the contractors had not delivered as promised.
Fubara instructed Alabo George Kelly, Commissioner of Works, to start the process of revoking the contract right away and re-awarding it to a trustworthy contractor so that the road project could be finished on time.
The governor stated, “We made a pledge to the people in all 23 Local Government Areas that security of lives and property would be our main assignment, and to ensure that every project initiated in the 23 LGAs that is currently underway would be completed.
“Recall that the Dr. Peter Odili administration started the Ogoni/Opobo/Nkoro/Andoni unity road project, and that the recently concluded administration also completed the majority of the project.
“We promised to build this road for the people of Andoni, and I can assure you that I intend to do so within the first year of my administration.”
