Nigeria’s early elimination from the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco just three weeks ago caused Flamingos head coach Bankole Olowookere to express profound regret.

Recall that the Nigerian girls’ career came to an agonizing end following a 4-0 loss to Italy in the Round of 16 match held in Rabat.

The Flamingos were punished by a clinical Italian team despite displaying moments of promise and missing multiple scoring opportunities.

Italy took the lead soon before halftime and dominated the second half after Nigeria’s goal was rejected by VAR for offside.

It hurts a lot, to be honest. After the game, Olowookere told FIFA.com, “We went into the game with the mindset of doing something special, making sure that we win and we advance to the next stage.” Sadly, we managed to hold the game for forty-four minutes until the agonizing goal was scored, and the second half was a complete waste. One of those things, that is.

As a result, Nigeria’s attempt to improve on its semifinal performance in the tournament’s previous edition has ended too soon.

After winning, Italy advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will play in the last eight against Brazil, the Netherlands, and North Korea. The Netherlands defeated the United States on penalties following a 1-1 draw, North Korea crushed hosts Morocco 6-1, and Brazil easily defeated China 3-0.
