The rising tendency of election losers attempting to reverse poll results has been denounced by Mohammed Adamu Aliero, the senator for Kebbi Central.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a retreat for the Senate and House Committees on Electoral Matters, which took place at the Legend Hotel on Airport Road in Lagos, the congressman issued a warning: the trend of using the legal system to pay people needs to end.

It is a grave abuse that threatens Nigeria’s democracy, he said.

It’s possible that he won’t even contest the election outcome. There have been instances in the past where the loser of an election will go to court, bribe his way out of it, and have himself deemed unfit for office,” the senator stated.

He warned that unless reforms are put in place, trust in democratic institutions will continue to decline, lamenting that such actions make a mockery of the political process.

Legislators have been working hard to overhaul Nigeria’s electoral system for more than a year and a half, Aliero added, holding public hearings.

In order to eliminate any uncertainty, discrepancy, or disparities, we will make all necessary amendments. We are working to solve the several flaws in the Electoral Act 2022 that we have found in order to ensure free, fair, and credible elections,” he stated.
