Nigerian artist Spyro, whose real name is Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, has talked about how his career was influenced by his faith, even when it meant defying his own team’s counsel.
Spyro reportedly left his record label in 2019 to launch his own, claiming he used bank and personal debts to finance the business without any outside funding.
Some team members advised him along the road to remove “Christ Ambassador” from his profile and abandon his “Jesus Boy” brand since they felt it diminished his appeal.
Spyro refused to back down, saying he would sooner die than have Jesus taken away from him.
Additionally, he rejected the idea of substituting “Child of God” for it, stating that he would be given opportunities because of his faith.
“Let me tell you a little about why I am especially grateful today,” he wrote. We started using bank and personal debts after I left the label I was signed to in 2019 to launch own. Since then, no one has provided any kind of outside financial assistance.

Then one morning when I got up, several team members approached me with inquiries concerning my “Jesus Boy” brand. We don’t think this brand is working for us, therefore you might need to modify it, they said, and I was instructed to take down the “Christ Ambassador” that I had written on my profile at the time.
It swiftly descended into a heated argument, and I recall declaring that I would sooner die than have Jesus taken off my profile. When they realized I wasn’t going to back down, someone suggested I at least modify it to “Child of God,” which is a more inclusive term in his opinion, even though I could understand their point of view—that being associated with Jesus confines me and doesn’t seem lucrative.
“I refused once more and assured them that the Jesus I proclaim would clear my path. A lot of artists are struggling right now—no deals, no shows—but you are in a very good spot, and I am proud of you, one of my coworkers told me over the phone recently.
