Supreme Court Affirms Gov Sanwo-Olu’s Election, Dismisses Labour Party Candidate’s Appeal

 

A five member panel of justices of the Supreme Court has upheld the election of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State.

Justice Mohammed Garba, who read the lead judgement dismissed the appeal filed by  Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP).

 

According to the apex court, the appeal of the Labour Party candidate lacked merit and was consequently dismissed.

 

The court dismissed allegation of dual citizenship of the deputy governor of Lagos State which the appellant heavy relied upon.

 

Rhode-Vivour had laid claim to the seat currently occupied by Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and prayed the apex court to declare him as the authentic winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.

 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Sanwo-Olu governor having won majority of the lawful votes cast in the election.

 

Dissatisfied, Rhodes-Vivour, who came second in the election had had approached the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal to challenge Sanwo-Olu’s victory at the poll.

 

They had alleged irregularities, malpractices, non-compliance, as well as corrupt practices amongst others upon which they want the court to void Sanwo-Olu’s election.

 

Besides, he argued that the governor was not qualified to be on the ballot for APC, on grounds of forgery and perjury.
