US Embassy Criticizes Governors for Spending Billions on Government Houses Amid Widespread Hardship
Despite Nigerians’ current economic distress, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has expressed alarm over state governors’ extravagant spending on official homes.
The embassy referenced an article by The Africa Report titled “Nigeria’s ruling class splashes billions on government houses” in a post on its official đť•Ź handle on Tuesday.
In contrast to President Bola Tinubu’s insistence that Nigerians bear the consequences of his administration’s economic policies, the report criticized the expensive initiatives of many state governments.

Nigerians are tightening their belts, but the governing elite is not doing the same, the survey claimed.
The Government House was described as “an embarrassment and unbefitting” after the administration of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde approved ₦63.4 billion for renovations.
According to reports, Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, one of the poorest states in Nigeria, set aside ₦14.9 billion for a brand-new, ultra-modern home, and another ₦14.23 billion for the building of a House of Assembly complex.
The US Embassy shared the report and cited proponents of accountability and openness who denounced Nigerian government leaders’ spending habits.
The embassy said, “Such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust,” which heightened worries about the nation’s governance and resource management.
