On Monday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul declared that Greenland belonged to Denmark, emphasizing that the NATO alliance might talk about bolstering its defense if needed.
Wadephul made this statement in response to US President Donald Trump’s renewed threats to seize Greenland, which frightened NATO members and gained additional urgency when Trump carried out his threats to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
Remember that Trump originally expressed his desire to annex Greenland during his first term as president in 2019. He has since stated this desire on several occasions.
“We do need Greenland, absolutely,” Trump said in an interview with The Atlantic magazine on Sunday, rekindling the initiative. It is essential to our defense.
However, Wadephul told reporters in Lithuania that Germany had concerns about Maduro’s overthrow and emphasized that, following Trump’s declaration that the US would rule the nation, the Venezuelan people should decide their own destiny in free and fair elections.
Wadephul emphasized that Denmark included Greenland.
“And since Denmark is a NATO member, Greenland will, in theory, also be subject to NATO defense,” he stated.
