A former legislator from the Kaduna Central Senatorial District has criticized lawmakers for using the media to voice their opposition to the use of voice voting in Rivers State’s State of Emergency confirmation.
Any member who wants to voice such a concern should have done so in the National Assembly’s chambers, not the press, according to Shehu Sani.
Remember that President Bola Tinubu declared a State of Emergency in Rivers, and the National Assembly members voted on it.
However, the leadership of both chambers chose to use voice voting instead of following the law’s specifications and conducting a head count to ascertain whether the Assembly had a quorum.
Several people, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and the People’s Democratic Party, among others, denounced the voting procedure, and shortly after that, Ireti Kingibe, a sitting lawmaker, also did so.
To this, Sani responded that all objections ought to be made inside the chambers rather than outside or in the press.

On X, he said, “Any politician who has a problem with voice votes or quorum should raise a point of order on the floor and demand to be heard. If they are unable to speak in the chamber, they should then go to the media to voice their concerns.
“Some lawmakers purposefully chose to abstain if there isn’t a quorum,” Sani said.
